How To Teach Children To Fish

Take a Walk. Hike through the woods to get to the fishing site, taking the time to stop and look at the trees and talk about the wildlife.

Get Ready. Sit down and go through your tackle box. Pick up and describe some of the items such as lures, line, and bobbers. This is a good time to talk about safety.

Get Set. Start slow by tying on a light weight and casting it out into the water. Let your child reel it in, and cast it out again. If you can catch a fish on your rod, hand it over and let them feel the difference as they reel in the fish.

Go! Rig your child’s fishing rod with a hook, a worm, and a bobber. Cast it out and let them see what happens.

Be Patient. Don’t expect to get in much fishing yourself. Be ready to spend your time casting your child’s line. Kids will usually reel it back in as soon as it hits the water. It takes some time, but they’ll learn.

Enjoy. Take the time to appreciate the time you have together, and the beauty of the day. It’s not all about the fish.
